It was on that date that Arthur Guinness, age 34, took a 9,000-year lease on a brewery at £45 a year.

That brewery was St.

James' Gate in Dublin, now the largest stout brewery in the world -- producing 300 million pints a year! In 1862 the traditional Irish Harp as adopted as its trademark, symbolizing the special bond between Guinness and Ireland.
